Stutsman County was created by the 1872-1873 territorial legislature and named for Enos Stutsman, a powerful politician in the early days of the Dakota Territory. The county government was first organized on June 20, 1873. Jamestown is the county seat. In 1872, the U.S. Army established Fort Seward, a small post garrisoned by three companies (about 120 men) of the Twentieth Infantry Regiment, on a bluff overlooking the confluence of the James River and Pipestem Creek. The fort guarded the crossing of the James by the Northern Pacific Railroad. The fort only lasted five years, being decommissioned in 1877 - but the railroad remained, establishing a repair yard that was among the city's main industries until the 1960s. Jamestown was founded in 1872 and incorporated in 1883, it was also known as Buffalo City. Below is a photo of the James River in Jamestown.
The cities of Stutsman County are Buchanan, Edmunds, Cleveland, Courtenay, Jamestown, Kensal, Medina, Millarton, Montpelier, Pingree, Spiritwood Lake, Streeter, and Woodworth. Unincorporated communities are those of Spiritwood, and Fort Seward.
